We have several awards, given to the deserved or undeserved, in different names in our country. However, I think it is time to institute another award for the scamsters (the people who compete with the like-minded to tarnish the name of our nation). As far as the awards are concerned, they are the most under-privileged as there are no awards so far to appreciate their work. How about giving it the name "Bharat Scam Ratna Award"? I am waiting for your response.
Yours truly,
Innocent Indian
Wow! That is a great line of thinking, indeed. I wonder why this thought never occurred to our great politicians. I think they are totally pre-occupied with their area of action (I want to call it 'scamming'.) However, your idea is great and I request the government and the opposition (I am sure they will be excited about this very idea.) to join hands and get a motion passed in our non-performing or under-performing or no-performing parliament. And I think it is the right time to initiate such an action. A great Indian year of scams and scandals!
However, this appears to be a difficult task. The problem, though seemingly simple, is the selection. Who shall we prefer? How can we prefer one over the other? Interestingly, this doubt arises because we have many (Oh, really many) ‘over-qualified men’. Politicians apart, there are hundreds from various walks of life. They are people from sports (CWG scam), cricket (Lalit Modi and IPL scam), hospital (MCI scandal), universities (Deemed varsities scandal), Army (Adarsh scam, Kargil coffin scam, Land scam and many). And there are many more from every walks of life that affect citizens lives.
Whom shall we prefer, my Indian? There are even possibilities that these gentlemen might influence the selection procedure itself. In a country where we cannot even trust a seemingly innocent man like our very prime minister, whom shall we trust? I am unable to choose one. I am sorry.
Have you noticed a big ‘drama’ being enacted across our country? I am sure you might not have missed it. Raids! Yes, raids carried out in the homes and residences of those whom we think deserve the award we proposed earlier. What a joke? Unfortunately, our countrymen are innocent. They believe in everything. But you and I can’t help wondering why this comedy is being enacted. What is the point of searching these places several months after something was committed. Are we fools to believe this mega drama?
My Indian, the other comedy is our justice delivery system. Do you think any of them will be convicted during my lifetime? Perhaps, only my grandchildren will be fortunate to hear such things if at all it happens. When I was a child, I heard something of a Bofors scandal or something, but I haven’t heard of any conviction so far in my life. Interestingly, recently I heard the CBI is planning to approach the Supreme Court to withdraw cases against one of the suspects in the scandal. That is the suspense of the whole drama. Then, there was one Sukh Ram. He was found to have amassed millions of unaccounted money when he was a central minister. You know what happened? One of the rarest thing in Indian history. Indian, don’t think it is something like the British leaving the country. It was the conviction and sentencing of this Sukhram. Then, he filed an appeal before the higher court. I wonder if it is still pending before the court. And finally, he passed away a few years back. I must say he helped us from facing further embarrassment. He never served his prison term, but he enjoyed his ill-gotten wealth.
So, my countryman, you have to think if we can ever get hold of these scamsters. So, as you said, it is better to acknowledge their brilliance in their field of expertise. Should we punish them? No, never. They are our national ‘assets’. One day, they might even receive the awards you have proposed for them.
Don’t be disheartened, Indian. This is our way of life.
Keep writing,
An Indian rebel.
